SITTING BENCH
2018
Persimmon + Walnut
39″l x 15″w x 18″t
This piece was designed around several pieces of Persimmon lumber that I purchased from a local sawmill outside of Raleigh, NC back in 2010 when I first started woodworking. In fact, this wood was originally used to build a modern platform bed years ago; one of my first projects. Changing styles and lifestyles led me to dismantle the piece and put the wood in storage for several years. I finally had the inspiration for this piece to highlight the beauty of the rare Persimmon wood.
The bench consists of equal width boards edge-glued to create the top and sides. These come together at box jointed corners creating the main frame of the bench. Underneath, a carcass of Black Walnut frames two drawer openings and adds structural integrity to the bench. The drawers were also made of Walnut, featuring dovetail corners and “false” Persimmon drawer fronts. The drawer fronts were cut from the same board yielding a continuous grain pattern and focal point of the piece.
